Henry ponders international future post-Euro 2008

Thierry Henry admits he has considered the prospect of stepping into international retirement this summer.

The French striker is set to represent his country at Euro 2008, but the tournament could prove to be his last for Les Bleus.

At 30-years-old he accepts that it may be time to let the younger generation take his place, and does not want to outstay his welcome on the world stage.

"I would like to play in the 2010 World Cup, but sometimes you do things that you should not do," Henry told L'Equipe.

"Anyway, 2010 is still far away. At first I will see what happens at the Euros."

"I have thought about retiring after Euro 2008. I can't say that I haven't. I'm almost 31 and I'm a forward"

“I am about to turn 32. Two years, that is not easy."

Henry is sceptical regarding Raymond Domenech’s decision to pick a provisional squad of 30 players before reducing it to 23.

“I experienced it (prior to the 1998 World Cup). At the end of the day, I stayed, but I have experienced the wait."

“And believe me, that is not easy.”

The former Arsenal hit-man helped France to European Championship glory in 2000 and is adamant that Raymond Domenech's side are capable of repeating that feat this time around.

"We have a side capable of winning the Euros, but we have to take our first game against Romania very seriously," he said.

"In attack we have weapons that can hurt any team, with Karim Benzema, Nicolas Anelka, Franck Ribery and a few others."

He has struggled to adapt to life in the Primera Liga and admits that his future at Camp Nou remains shrouded in doubt.

"Will I stay at Barca next season?" Henry asked.

"I have three years left in my contract so, for the moment, I'm a Barca player. Then again, so many things are being said over there."

"For the moment, I'm at Barca and I'm focused on Euro 2008. For the rest, we will see."

Henry: I Don't Know If Pep Wants Me

The French star's future has been the subject of continuous rumours after a season that has seen him struggle to live up to the expectations at Camp Nou and has been linked with a move back to England.

Frank Rijkaard's departure means that Henry must now wait and see what Guardiola wants to do with him, although he explained that he knows the incoming coach.

"We have met on quite a few occasions and are used to talking with each other, but I do not know what he wants to do or if he counts on me or how he would play me," he said.

Henry has been played on the left side of the three-pronged Barça attack and has had to revise his game to suit the slower tactics of the Balugrana and that has seen him fail to reproduce the form he showed at Arsenal.

Injuries have also hampered his campaign and that has meant that press have stated that teams such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa are considering offering him a route back to the Premier League.

Instead of reading all the speculation and rumours, however, Henry plans to enjoy his summer break and then focus on Euro 2008 before considering what his next step will be when he returns.

"I will ignore everything that is being said in the next few weeks. I have three years left on my contract and at the moment I am a Barça player," he continued.

"Later on, if I do not enter in to the plans of the club then that would be the moment to look again at things."

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THIERRY

The sheer number of Thierry Henry goals marked in his club an international profile makes him one of the best striker of today, but it's not just goals that make him the fantastic soccer player that he is. His elegant playing style, passing ability, decisiveness and overall technique is what brought him in the exclusive group of world class players and gave me a good reason to bring you this Thierry Henry bio.

Born in Les Ulis (France) on August 17, 1977, he made his debut in top flight football with Monaco during the 1994-95 campaign, aged just 17. He began to show some of his ability on the right wing for the Principality-based outfit. After a brief spell at Juventus in 1998-99, Henry joined Arsenal, where he went on to show his true colours and become one of the best players in the history of the north London club.

Having moved into the centre of attack, Henry proved how lethal he was in front of goal at Arsenal even though he became known for drifting out to both flanks to pull his markers across the field. With him in the side, the label of 'Boring Arsenal' was forgotten as the Gunners became an attractive, attacking force in the Premiership and in Europe.

During his time in England he broke virtually every Arsenal club record. He became the Gunners' top goalscorer of all time with 214 goals and became the record scorer in the Premiership (since it was formed in 1992) with 164 goals as well as finishing as the scorer in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006).

His immense trophy haul includes a World Cup winners' medal as he was a member of the successful French squad in 1998. Two years after that he helped his country to win the European Championships in Belgium and Holland and then added the Confederations Cup to his collection in 2003. In ten years as a full international, up until the summer of 2007, Henry has played 92 games for France and netted 39 goals, just two less than the legendary Michel Platini, the French all-time record goalscorer.

At club level, Henry helped Arsenal win the Premiership twice (2002 and 2004) and the FA Cup on three occasions (2002, 2003 and 2005). On a personal note, he finished as Europe's top goalscorer and picked up the Golden Boot in 2004 and 2005.

PROFILE

Speed and technique are two of Henry's main characteristics, which he allies with efficiency and elegance. He is considered to be one of the most skilful players in the game with the ball at his feet as well as being an extremely intelligent footballer.

Despite having been moulded into a central striker under Arsène Wenger, Henry can play across the front line, which could well prove to be very useful as he vies for a place in the Barça team with Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi during the 2007-08 season.
